Goalie gear for soccer

You may already know that soccer goalies are a little bit different from the rest of the team.

Firstly, according to the FIFA soccer rules the goalie is allowed to touch and hold the during play.

And secondly, the goal area is a hotspot for action for strikers, defenders, and the goalkeeper as they contested for the ball.

The goalie will be blocking the ball, diving to make saves, jumping, and tackling for the ball to prevent any goal being scored.

So, you need to equip your kid with the proper gear to minimize injuries. Follow me as I dive (no pun intended) into the topic.

1. Shirt

Purpose: Performance and safety

While the team is wearing the same colored kit, the goalie must wear a different color. The more contrast the color, the better so that they can be easily identified as the goalie by the referee and the players.

But the most important role of the shirt is that they protect the goalie from scratches and cuts when they land on the ground or bump into other players.

Long or short sleeve shirt?

There are long and short-sleeved shirts available and it is up to a goalie’s to decide unless it is specified the club.

For beginners, I recommend that they choose long-sleeve shirts because they have padded elbows for protection. Best goalkeeper shirts have pads on the elbow and the sides.

Also, the materials used to construct the shirts should be breathable, moisture-wicking, and durable so that they are comfortable and be able to protect the goalie from cuts and scratches. Generally, they are made of 100% polyester or similar.

Lastly, make sure the shirts fit perfectly and should not be flappy or too slack that it looks like a dress.

In the end, it is up to you to decide whether to go for long or short sleeves but you must consider safety first.

2. Pants

Purpose: Performance and safety

Similar to the goalie shirt, the pants also protect the goalie from small injuries such as scratches sustained when diving to the ground.

These pants also have pads on the sides, thighs, and if they are long pants they will also have pads on the knees.

Choose a pant that is breathable and durable so that it is comfortable to play with, preferably the material is nylon or polyester.

Long pants offer overall protection to the lower body including the knees so I would recommend these for beginners but in the end, it is up you and your kid to choose either goalie pants or shorts.

3. Gloves

Purpose: Performance and safety

Goalkeeper gloves help with grip when catching the ball but they also protect the goalie’s palms, fingers, backhand, and wrists from injuries.

There are mainly 3 types of gloves and some may be a combination of all as the glove technology continues to improve.

The gloves are constructed of latex in the palm where goalie will use the most to catch hard kickball. The latex will act as a cushion to soften the impact of the ball, the thicker the latex, the better. But this will compromise performance as the goalie will not “feel” the ball better.

A lot of gloves have plastic spines inserts to protect the goalies’ fingers from bending backward when blocking the ball – hyperextension of the fingers can be painful.

On the backhand, foam is normally used for protection and comes in handy for punching the ball away instead of catching it.

And finally, the closure on the wrist must be able to secure the glove in place and most importantly to support the palm and protect the wrist from bending backward.

Other materials used are polyurethane, nylon, polyester, artificial leather, breathable mesh on the backhand, and fleece for cold weather.

4. Shinguards

Purpose: Safety

The primary function of the shinguards is to protect the shin – the area between the knees and the ankle.

This area of the leg is exposed to injuries because players use their legs to kick and tackle for the ball, and goalies, this is very true.

There are many types of shinguards on the market like the slip-in, sock shin, and the ankle shinguard. They all have their pros and cons.

Shinguards are made from a variety of synthetic materials like fiberglass, foam rubber, polyurethane, plastic, and metal.

On the inside, there is a soft layer of foam or similar material for comfort and as an additional cushion to mitigate the impact.

Slip-in and sock shinguards are lightweight and can easily be taken off but they do not cover the shin area adequately.

For beginners, I recommend the ankle shinguards because it also protects the ankle but it also restricts movement.

5. Socks

Purpose: Performance and safety

The socks serve a lot of purpose by keeping the shinguard in place and covering any exposed parts of the lower legs from scratch and cuts.

Socks also makes wearing a soccer cleat comfortable and prevent blister caused by friction between the feet and the inside of the cleats.

They can be made of wool but can end up heavy because it absorbs sweat or nylon which is lightweight and breathable.

Make sure the socks reach the knees so that the entire lower legs and the shinguards are properly covered.

6. Cleats

Purpose: Performance and safety

There are many types of soccer cleats on the market that can be worn to play on a particular surface like the firm ground (FG), soft ground (SG), hard ground (HG), and artificial grass (AG).

The upper is usually made of synthetic leather, knitted, and expensive real leather.

For goalies, the right soccer cleat is crucial for performance and protection from injuries as well.

As goalkeepers tend to react to the direction of the ball, make dives, kick the ball, twist, and turn the cleats need to have good traction on the ground.

Also, a soft but durable upper to cushion the feet when kicking hardball.

Generally, firm ground (FG) soccer cleats are recommended for beginners and not cleats with metal studs.

Conclusion

I hope you learn something in this post that will help understand the gear required by goalies

Remember with any soccer gear, safety, comfort, and performance must be taken into consideration. Do not buy any gear because it looks fancy or trendy unless you know it will serve its purpose.

All the gear mentioned above is mandatory, meaning a goalie must wear them before being allowed to play.

Be safe and enjoy soccer.
